HISTORY OF THE SANTA SUIT
Have you ever wondered how the first Santa suit ever came about?
Sometimes it is often told that Haddon Sundblom was the designer of
the Santa suit when creating advertising work for the Coca-Cola
Company. Although his work did standardize the western Image of
Santa with a red suit and white fur trim, the suit of the modern
Santa Claus made its first appearance before that in the drawings by
Thomas Nast which began in the 1863 edition of Harpers Weekly. The
original drawings show a small Santa who could easily slide down
chimneys and eventually becoming full size in his later works.
Thomas Nast was the first one to draw Santa Claus wearing a red suit
with white fur lining, a stocking cap and a black belt with large
buckle.
In the United States, Santa Claus continues to be depicted with a
red jacket and pants trimmed in white fur and accented with a broad
buckled belt, a matching hat and large black boots. In some European
countries where the form of Saint Nicholas remains popular, the
Santa suit worn resembles religious clothing similar to the
Victorian Santa Suit. The outfit is closer to that of a saint with a
long robe and Bishop's mitre. Before the standardized style, the
Santa suit was in a state of flux with a variety designs including
an outfit that was tan in color and another that was green.
By the middle of the 19th century, the Santa Suit became well
established with the sold red color jacket, pants and hat all
trimmed with white fur. The professional Santa Suit is now easily
recognized around the world to that of the gift giving Santa Claus.
