Choosing Safe Toys for Kids
Top Toy Safety Tips for your Baby or Child

Creating a safe play environment can be easy when you choose safe toys for your child. In year 2009 alone, there were over 181,900 injuries from toy-related accidents with nearly half of these injuries from children under the age of 5.

With the help of "Top Toy Safety Tips" from SafeKids.org, we are able to share some information for helping you to make sure your children play safely with their Christmas toys and gifts!

  • Confirm that your kids play with toys that are age-appropriate. Warning labels on toys should be read before purchasing.
  • Make sure toys are well-made.
  • Toys should be regularly checked for damages that could create hazards. In addition, repair or discard damaged toys immediately.
  • Discarded toys should be well out of children's reach.
  • Supervise your children while they are at play. Being aware of potential dangers such as small parts, strings and cords, moving parts, electrical or battery-powered cords or wheels is important.
  • Riding toys should not be allowed near stairs, traffic or swimming pools.
  • Educate your children the importance of putting their toys away after play. Toys intended for younger kids should be stored separately from the toys suitable for older children.
  • Confirm toy chests are open (no lid) or have safety hinges installed.

Toy Recall Notices

The U.S. federal government recalls hundreds of products each year. A recalled product is required to be removed from store shelves by retailers, but often they can still be found in homes or on the second-hand market. Make sure your kids' toys and hand-me-downs are safe by confirming they are not on the List of Toy Recalls from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. SafeKids.org also provides an updated list of recalls every month of the year on their Latest Toy Recalls.
